Benson's Animal Park
Crossposted to newengland_ue (but it isn't showing up there yet)
You can put this on your U.X.F. website if you want - since it's youtube so it's already publicly available, there isn't much I could do about it anyway if you wanted to embed my video.
Today we went to Benson's Animal Park aka Benson's Animal Farm a.k.a. New England Playland. Any of you who grew up in southern nh or massachusetts may remember this zoo/amusement park near Nashua NH. The place is quite overgrown, but it is not off-limits to visitors and there are still some artifacts to see. Normally I wouldn't post video with identifying characteristics, but there are no "No Trespassing" signs, guards, or anything. I think it's in the process of becoming a public park but is stuck in the middle of legal stuff because of the asbestos. This was the first time I've explored an abandoned place that I had also been familiar with when it was open. It was quite disorienting, nothing really looked familiar after it's all overgrown.
The coolest parts were:
* seeing a huge gray heron in one of the ponds
* thinking we found the old train tracks that ran around the zoo for the kiddies.
* the Old Lady Who Lived in a Shoe
* the gorilla or tiger cages (not sure which it was)
I made a little film about our trip. In it, I do a lot of silly musing. Perhaps we all do but most of you only post pictures.( Collapse )

This might be of interest to some of you: in the american tv show "Dirty Jobs"
season 1 episode 5, they explore the sewers of San Francisco. There's some great footage shown and interesting information given about the maintenance & history of those sewers. Cheers :)

new here & a new project
Hi, i just joined this community. I am an artist living in England and i am making a new project and i need artists/creative people to participate. Here is more info...
****summary: I LOVE MY CITY: urban identites.
We all have a personal identity with the city in which we live in or near too, weather its a favourite building, street or landmark, personal or unique experience, memory or event, or it's just that we have a love of where we grew up and each individual as their own social history with their home city.
To investigate this further I am calling for people to send me a personal visual representation of their home city in any medium through the post. This could include:
List of words
.....anything goes, any medium.
Each item that is sent to me will appear in an exhibition in February 2007 in Salford, England. Each persons name and location will appear next to the sent work.
If you would like to take part in this project by sending me an item please e-mail email@example.com for my postal address.
If you would like to send an item that you think will cost a lot to send i can pay you back for the postage once the item has arrived.
Thank you and i hope to hear from you.

So I visited a theme park that was owned by the Chinese government and has been closed for three years. My friend has pictures which are soon to follow. We found a letter that talked about sneaking some employees back to china it was pretty weird.

the buddy system?
hey everybody. I'm looking for people to go exploring with in the atlanta area.
I've only been in atlanta a couple of years and i live in roswell, so i don't know a whole lot of places get into trouble, especially inside the perimeter, but i'm always up for exploring. also, i'm pretty strong, athletic and flexible, so i can get into/out of hard to reach places. sundays are really my best days because i work and go to school full time, but some weekdays are cool too, especially later in the evening.
anyways, if anybody's up for it, comment here or in my journal and we'll hook up.

Okay, I know everyone loves to talk about UE and tell their stories, which is why I need everyone's help. I'm doing a research project for my English class this semester and we had to chose a community we belong to to go out and 'study' so to speak, so I of course chose UE. My teacher's really cool about everything and super-psyched to see my project, but since she can't allow me to go in the buildings for the sake of the project (and then she added "But what I don't know won't hurt me") I'm supposed to be going on memories and interviews with other explorers. This is where you guys come in. I've written pages of stories and stuff about my experiences and my feelings about UE but I need to hear from you guys. Your names can be left anonymous or you can use a pseudonym, whatever, I don't care, I just need your input. So below is a list of questions, and I would love love love it if you would answer them thoroughly and descriptively. I want your best stories, and your deepest feelings. Feel free to add whatever you'd like and build off of other questions if you so desire. Once I type the whole project up, I can post it on here and show you guys how it turned out. And again, I don't have to use your name, so if that's the reason you're uncomfortable sharing, you don't have to be. You can either post it here to share with everyone else, send it to me in a private message or even e-mail me (firstname.lastname@example.org). Even if you can only answer a few questions, or only want to answer a few questions, I'll take whatever you can give me, just send me some input and I'll love you forever. Even if you don't explore, you just love the idea of it or whatever, answer what you can and send it to me.
You guys have no idea how much I appreciate this. And anyways, who doesn't love to tell their stories?
+How did you get into Urban Exploration?
+What kept you coming back?
+How long have you been doing it?
+What do you get out of it?/Why do you do it?
+What do you bring? Why?
+Who do you go with, if anyone?
+Personal safety tips/advice?
+What's your favorite thing about exploring?
+How do you prepare for an 'outing'? Do you reasearch the building ahead of time?
+In your opinion, what are the most common risks and dangers involved with exploring and how do you try to prepare for and avoid them?
+What's the first building you ever went to?
+What's your favorite place to go? Why?
+Have you had any close calls or run-ins with security or 'the law'?
+Do you have any funny stories or memories?
+Any stories or memories you'd like to share pertaining to UE.
+Anything else you feel like adding/sharing.
Thank you all so so much.
(x-posted like crazy).

Anyone know of any good places to explore in Vancouver, WA or Portland, OR? Or near those places?

Lurker at the threshold
You'll have to forgive my impertinence but I am an enthusiast.
I'm attending college here at San Francisco and I was hoping someone might be able to point me toward some interesting locations. I have visited the abandoned Public Health Service Hospital and hope to once more before its demolition. I can't get enough of the atmosphere that these places offer.
If I'm asking to much much, I apologize.

Okay, I know this is a pretty random question, but it has to do with abandonment so I figured someone here might know the answer.
Which hospital did Corrosion of Conformity film their "Dance of the Dead" video in?

Rochester Subway Lives!
Hey, I just thought everyone here would like to know that the Rochester Subway destruction project (The one where they wanted to fill Roch. Subway in with $21 Million worth of dirt) has been averted! This made me sooo happy when I read it, since I've only been there once, and want to go back!
Check out the news at http://www.chillthefill.org/
, which is the website for the group dedicated to preserving the Rochester Subway System. Whee!

I'm not entire sure this counts as "urban" exploration, but I assumed most of the members of the community would appreciate the post.
